Temat: Albatros D.III (Oef .) Bauart 253 1/32 Roden
...Mayrhofer odpisał na forum Tobie tak: hallo, arekch, the dimensions are 337mm at the rear end ,station 15 and 431mm at the front end ,station 12. this dimensions are the same on all albatros scouts from DI to D V. the tailplane is interchangable between all types. well this is a theoretical case as there are some small variations in the size of the tubing used to hold them (28 mm and 30 mm). so the outline of the tailplane is the same throughout. the late production series 253 albatrosses has wire trailing edges on the elevator and ailerons instead of solid teardrop tubing. cheers koloman mayrhofer Nie znam na tyle angielskiego ,aby słowo w słowo przetłumaczyć. ...species, including many found nowhere else. · The central Pacific Islands are among the world’s last relatively intact coral reef ecosystems. These areas contain nearly four times as many shallow-water reef-building coral species as the Florida Keys. · Millions of seabirds use these areas as critical stopover points, breeding areas and feeding grounds. These include tropicbirds, boobies, frigatebirds, terns, noddies, petrels, shearwaters and albatrosses. · Five species of sea turtle have been documented as present in the eight proposed islands and surrounding waters: green (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea). Green and hawksbill turtles forage and nest in the US Pacific islands, and loggerheads, leatherbacks and olive ridleys forage and/or migrate through US...

Temat: Albatross Populations Threatened by Disease, Says Study
...the danger of becoming ensnared on long-line hooks. However, a recent paper suggests that avian disease outbreaks, while never previously confirmed in that part of the world, may be at least as significant a factor in the declines of at least some albatross populations. Amsterdam Island, a remote island in the southern Indian Ocean, is home to the only population of the critically-endangered Amsterdam albatross, and also to a large population of yellow-nosed albatrosses. Over the last 20 years, this latter population has halved in size, from 37,000 to 18,000 pairs. This decline has generally been ascribed to long line fisheries – and indeed, yellow-nosed albatross are known to be caught in long lines off Australia and South Africa. However, the paper's author argues that "there has been a tendency to attribute decrease of albatross populations to long-line fishing whereas very few studies so far have tried...

Temat: Plastic Pollution Threatens World's Largest Marine Reserve
...ship M.Y. Esperanza has recently departed Hawaii as part of the Defending Our Oceans expedition (3). The recently declared U.S. National Monument- the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands lies close to this accumulation of trash, putting one of the most vital links in the chain of oceans health at risk. "During the course of the Defending Our Oceans expedition, we have seen coastlines covered in rubbish, but out at sea the problem becomes even greater - with turtles, albatrosses and many other marine creatures becoming entangled in floating plastic or even choking on it," warned Greenpeace International scientist, Adam Walters, onboard the Esperanza. "The danger to marine life has been known for decades, but the scale of the problem has not been realised. With plastic consumption rapidly increasing globally, plastic has become ubiquitous in the ocean," added Walters. The problem is a global one....

...world a shelter for us; we owe much less to the scattering of dry land we tend to think of as Earth. Our survival and greatest dreams thrive on a generous brew of saltwater. Notwithstanding the recent enormous human tragedy on the Indian Ocean's shores, oceans have also suffered greatly in the past year. Millions of tons of waste have been dumped into the ocean, 100 million tons of fish have been culled for food and nearly 30 million tons of ocean wildlife -- sharks, sea turtles, albatrosses and dolphins, as well as fish and small creatures nobody wants to eat -- have been killed in the process. According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, canned tuna now contains enough mercury to poison unborn children and damage their nervous systems. Oceanographers from the Algalita Marine Research Foundation in Long Beach have discovered that the mass of microscopic plastic fragments in parts of the central Pacific Ocean is six times...

All known conifer species have now been assessed, including a new discovery in Viet Nam and a rediscovered species in China. The many movements into higher threat categories include one of the world's largest freshwater fish, three Neotropical primates and six albatrosses. "More than 12,000 species are known to be threatened with extinction. While we are still only scratching the surface in assessing all known species, we are confident this figure is an indicator of what is happening to global biological diversity," said Achim Steiner, IUCN Director General. "The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species provides the best available knowledge necessary for sound conservation action. We now need the...

"Seafo implements an eco-system approach and we agreed on these conservation measures as well as to reduce incidental mortality of seabirds, especially petrels and albatrosses, by fishing gear adjustments for trawlers and other technical measures during fishing operations," Hamukuaya said in a statement released after the meeting. "We also want to reduce mortality of sea turtles in fishing operations by making vessels promptly release turtles entangled in fishing gear when nets are pulled in." Seafo has banned transhipments of fish catches at sea to combat illegal, unregulated and unreported...

Now 51, he has written three books on the rising human impact on seas once presumed boundless. The first was on fishing, the next on the travels and travails of albatrosses. His latest, “Voyage of the Turtle: In Pursuit of the Earth’s Last Dinosaur” (Henry Holt, 2006), follows the struggles of the ocean’s ancient leatherbacks and other sea turtles. His prime goal, he has said, is to develop a “sea ethic” similar to the land ethic of Aldo Leopold, and a scattering of success stories has convinced him that a balance is still possible between exploitation and conservation of marine...
